8th Royal Fusiliers arrived in France in May 1915 as part of 36 Brigade, 12th Division. After a period of trench training the newly arrived division took over a sector of the line straddling the French-Belgian border near Ploegsteert. On 1st August, 1915, 8th Royal Fusiliers were in the trenches at Houplines. The Battalion Diary records that it was a quiet day except for two incidents. One man was killed by a rifle bullet presumably a sniper and another man was killed and several injured when an unexploded shell was hit by a pick being used by a working party and blew up. There is no record of which of these two fates befell Private Gardner.
